PLI Scheme for Food Processing Sector: A Catalyst for Growth

The Union Ministry of Food Processing Industries has dedicated ₹10,900 crore to the PLI scheme, providing a powerful growth engine for one of India’s most crucial sectors. This investment underscores the government’s commitment to making India a global leader in food processing.The scheme not only encourages domestic production but also focuses on promoting exports, upgrading technology, and ensuring that India meets international food safety and quality standards. By strengthening the food processing industry, the government aims to support farmers, create jobs, and increase income levels across the agricultural value chain.

 Speaking at Foodpro 2022, a biennial event on food processing, packaging, and food technology, Thiagarajan emphasized the role of the PLI scheme in driving industry innovation. The event, which kicks off on August 5 in Chennai, is expected to host 300+ exhibitors from around the world, showcasing cutting-edge technologies and products that will shape the future of food processing in India.The expo will include the newly introduced Food Packaging Expo, featuring the latest advancements in packaging solutions, and a special focus on banana and millet products—two segments that are gaining traction in the food industry. This event will demonstrate India's rising influence in the global food market and its growing ability to deliver high-quality, diverse food products.

Tamil Nadu, a leader in agriculture and food processing, will have a special pavilion at the event, showcasing its advancements in the sector. Tamil Nadu’s ministers, including MRK Panneerselvam (Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare) and R Sakkarapani (Food and Civil Supplies), are expected to attend the inaugural session, underscoring the state’s commitment to the industry.The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), which organizes Foodpro, has played a pivotal role in promoting technological advancements and fostering collaboration between industry stakeholders. Suchitra Ella, Chairperson of CII Southern Region, described Foodpro as an essential platform for showcasing the latest technologies that will fuel the future growth of India's food processing industry.

The PLI scheme for the food processing sector is a game-changer, providing the industry with the financial support needed to innovate and scale operations.
